Williams v Mistral Telecom Ltd t/a Free Upgrades
A 17 year old boy who was sacked just three-and-a-half hours into his new job was discriminated against on the basis of his age.
Sebastian Williams was told by his employer that its policy was to employ only people aged 18 or above.
At the tribunal the employer argued this policy was a proportionate means of achieving legitimate aims – including protecting the health and safety of young people – and that its actions were justified.
But the tribunal found Williams had suffered age discrimination, and awarded him £4,000 for injury to feelings. Williams also succeeded in claiming for unfair deduction of wages and unfair dismissal.
