Smoking in the Workplace

A ban on smoking in public places is now in force in Scotland, England and Wales.
Smoking is banned in any wholly or substantially enclosed space used by the public or where people work.
A substantially enclosed space is one that is enclosed on three sides, one of which is the roof or ceiling.
Enforcing authorities have declared that they will rigourously enforce the ban.

Inspections of premises in Scotland and Wales have revealed that many signs are not complying with the regulations. Crucially, signs must be displayed at each entrance to premises to warn visitors of the ban, as well as prominently within the workplace. Failing to display the right sign in the right location can result in fines of up to £1,000. Not all signs being sold by manufactures and suppliers are legally-compliant. Before purchasing signs, ask the supplier to confirm that they comply with the regulations
