Unfair Dismissal, health safety complaint

What would Maplins holiday camp yellowcoat Gladys Pugh have made of the case of Maria Moon, a former waitress at Hafan-y-Mor holiday camp in North Wales?

Moon was awarded compensation after winning a case which started when she claimed that accommodation allocated to her housed not only her, but also fleas. She told a Tribunal last November that the chalet she shared with another employee had a broken shower, damp coming through the walls and soled mattresses.

Moon said after waking up one night feeling feverish and scratching herself, she saw a doctor who told her she had infected insect bites which were probably from rat fleas.

After medical treatment, including antibiotics, Moon raised the matter with management, was housed in another chalet, the infected chalet was fumigated and Ms Moon moved back in three weeks later.

But in May 2008, Mood was dismissed allegedly because of over-staffing. She told the Kinmel Bay tribunal she had been dismissed because she had raised health and safety issues. Site manager David Evans said she lost her job because the café where she worked was overstaffed.

The Tribunal accepted this, but said no one else was considered for dismissal. Although Miss Moon won her case, Acas will not say how much she was awarded.
