Health & Safety Enforcement

 

Following publication of the annual health & safety report, Geoffrey Podger, Health and Safety Executive chief executive, said: "Last year (2006), the HSE issued 20% more enforcement notices and industry was fined more than £13m for flouting health and safety laws."

 

Judith Hackitt,, Health and Safety Commission Chairperson, said: "The rising enforcement figures show that negligence in workplace health and safety is not tolerated”.

 

Statistics from the Health and Safety Commission ( HSC) show that

 

  • More than 140,000 workplace accidents were reported last year.

 

  • Enforcement Notices issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) against companies rose by 20%.

 

  • Two hundred and forty-one employees were killed at work, and 36 million days – an average of 1.5 days for every worker in the UK) were lost overall.

 

  • 30 million days were lost because of work-related ill health, and six million because of workplace injury.
