Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, employers must provide suitable rest facilities for employees. Rest rooms or rest areas should have a sufficient number of tables and adequate seating, with backs, for the number of persons at work who may be likely to use them at any one time. The rest area should also contain seating that is suitable and sufficient for the number of disabled people at work.
The employer must also provide suitable arrangements for protecting non-smokers against the discomfort and harm caused by tobacco smoke. This might include banning smoking in the rest room or providing a separate, non-smoking, area. Caution is advised before introducing any smoking ban into the workplace.
